Is This The Future of Cinema? ScreenX: 270-Degree Cinema Screens

Cinema ticket sales are at an almost all time low thanks in no small part to online movie streaming services such as Netflix and Love Film. Consumers are increasingly choosing the comfort and convenience of their own living rooms when it comes to viewing films over making the trip to their local theatre. This leaves the motion picture industry not just in Hollywood, but the world with the challenge of enticing customers to get off the couch back and into theatre seats again. Innovation in theatres could be the key to countering this problem. Right now there are 40 cinemas in South Korea featuring this new ‘ScreenX’ technology, a new type of cinema screen experience developed by cinema group ‘CJ CGV’. It uses the theatre walls as supplemental screens to give people a near panoramic 270-degree movie viewing experience. It’s an entirely new production process so don’t expect to be seeing many films made for especially for ScreenX any time soon. Could ScreenX technology be the next IMAX?
